About CeceliaCecelia Otto - Headshot

Thank you visiting my website! Here is more information about me. I would love to perform at your next luncheon, wedding or concert. I also would love to write any pieces for you or any of your ensembles for upcoming concerts. Please contact me if you are interested.

I have an Interdepartmental Dual Masters of Music Degree in Vocal Performance and Composition from the University of Denver. I was the first person to do this type of Graduate degree in the history of the University.

I grew up in Minnesota and started my vocal training at 14. I then graduated from the Minnesota Center for Arts Education High School, where under the tutelage of composers Janika Vandervelve and Libby Larsen, I began to find my voice as a composer. In 1999, I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Linguistics from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. There I worked with composer Carleton Macy and Robert L. Morris, and took voice lessons with Laura Nichols and Derrick Pennix. I was active in the Macalester College Concert Choir, which held rehearsals five days a week. We toured both Nationally and Internationally, and gave monthly performances in the community.

At the University of Denver, I performed the roles of Zita in Gianni Schicchi, Third Lady in The Magic Flute, Orpheus in Orpheus & Euridice and The Duchess in The Gondoliers with the Lamont Opera Theatre. I was a Graduate Teaching assistant for two years with Jack Sheinbaum in undergraduate Music History. I studied composition with William Hill, and am currently still taking voice lessons with Sara Bardill to maintain and enhance my technique. My vocal and orchestral compositions also continue to receive performances in Minneapolis and Denver.

I also possess an Irish Studies Certificate from the University College Cork in Cork, Ireland, for my work with the Irish language (both old and modern), and my fieldwork in Irish Traditional Music (the fiddle music of Seamus Creagh was my main project). I still enjoy performing and transcribing this wonderful music, and can also do simple translations of the Irish language.

I am an active performer, composer, teacher, copyist and editor of music. I feel that my multiple degrees has not spread me thin, but made me more focused and dedicated to the music that is all around me. For me, it is truly my second language.
